Shreddies Diamond Rant

Sunday, 3 of February , 2008 at 12:22 pm

I just saw the most bizarre advertising scheme for Shreddies Cereal. They just started advertising for a new product called Shreddies Diamonds.

Now, I want you to look at the new Shreddies and then the old one. If for some reason you failed Kindergarten (and didn’t bother to repeat it), I want you to rotate your head 45 degrees. Wow, look at that, the old Shreddies look like the new improved Diamond Shreddies.

I don’t understand how they can justify advertising for this product. Do they think the general public are absolute morons! Don’t you think people will clue in when their bowl of Shreddies Diamonds looks identical to the regular Shreddies? They didn’t even bother changing the grid, so at least something would be different.

I refuse to buy this stuff. If I really want to eat Shreddies Diamonds, I will just buy regular Shreddies and rotate my coordinate system by 45 degrees.

you’ve got to be kidding me…perhaps your rationalistic concentration on computers and the like has removed any appreciation for irony or sarcasm…

the campaign is BRILLIANT - a piece of postmodern marketing genius that has gotten everyone talking about it. the whole POINT is that there is nothing different about the cereal…

From a marketing point of view, the ads are brilliant. They have definitely gotten people talking. However, they still rub me the wrong way. The really sad part of this ad campaign is that it is actually working.

Well, it helps them, by stirring up this…well, controversy probably isn’t the right word…so they get people talking, as a person said. But it also hurts them, because you get people who, “WTF? It’s the SAME thing! *Boycott*” So they took a risk and tried something….somewhere between retarded and genius.

That is so true… Just because people are talking about your product doesn’t necessarily mean that it is good for business. It will be interesting to see if this will hurt them in the end.

Honestly? Its a gag. Like marketing BMW to penguins that can’t climb a hill. Lighten up. Buy a box of Shreddies Diamonds and then email them complaining the box only contained squares (I just did).

BREAKING NEWS since the “new” Diamond Shreddies have been introduced…. Mini-Wheats frosted the OTHER side!!!!
Post is also experiencing conflict between the diamond and square shaped shreddies…. so they have decided join to the two and sell boxes with BOTH diamond and squares!!!

um, i hope you are joking… although the tone of your blog/rant makes it hard to tell whether you really understand the marketing campaign.

then again, i see this IS a computer/math/science site, so perhaps you have strong analytical skills to compensate for a lack of creativity…

Awesome marketing campaign. Bloggers around the world rage against it and, by doing so, bring everyone’s attention to Shreddies. The Post marketing department thanks you.

how is it brilliant? they are insulting OUR intelligence. And the new ad pisses me off even more then the first one….when I emailed the company after seeing the first commercial, I had asked who the fuck they were paying as the market researchers….the new commercial showed me….3 fat, balding men. I do not see how this is good advertisement if I am boycotting shreddies for this blatant…what do you call this? Is it now it’s own verb? Pulling a shreddies?

I’m reading all of the comments and ads on the new diamond shreddies. I can not stop laughing. I love it!! The people against these new ads are taking the time to write a blog about how much they hate it…some are even buying the product to try it before they complain…LOL. This ad comes from a whole new level of marketing. Marketing is all about thinking outside the box, not just changing products. GREAT JOB!!

Having eaten both the square and diamond, I find that the diamonds get stuck in your teeth more easily until they get soggy. I like both kinds though, and now they have a combo-pack! I bought one, and when I want just squares for breakfast, I just pick out the diamond ones and put them back in the box for next time!
